The World Series is a time of high drama, excitement and jubilation for baseball fans. But it also offers some pretty amazing, even unbelievable moments in the history of America’s favorite game. Here are 10 of our favorites from the last 115 years of Series action.
1. The ’89 Series
This World Series was a wild one, with five of the games decided by a single run and four of them ending in extra innings. It’s also a memorable one for being the first to feature a designated home team (the Astros) in the deciding game.
2. The ’04 Series
The 2004 World Series is known for the Red Sox breaking their 86-year drought, famously known as the Curse of the Bambino. But what’s also remembered is the improbable comeback in Game 7. In that game, Bill Buckner came within two strikes of clinching the Series for the Red Sox – only to see his fumbled bunt attempt give the Mets a win and a series victory.
3. The ’92 Series
The 1992 World Series is notable for being the only time that a team won a championship after finishing dead last in its division the year prior to the Series. The ’92 Series is also noteworthy for being the first to feature a starting pitcher pitching all seven games (Koufax, Atlanta).
4. The ‘2023 Series
The 2023 World Series was notable for being the only one that featured two teams that had won the previous year’s World Series competing against each other. This World Series was also notable for the fact that it was the first to be won in six games by a team that started the Series on the road.
