The World Series is a great time to take a look back at some of the best moments in this annual championship game. Despite the World Series only having been played 115 times, it has seen a number of memorable moments. Some of these highlights include a New York Yankees sweep in 2000, the Boston Red Sox ending their 86-year drought known as the Curse of the Bambino in 2004, and the Chicago White Sox winning their first World Series title in 2005.
The Dodgers have a 2-0 lead in this year’s World Series and the team’s offense has been key in that. However, the Dodgers’ offense hasn’t always been the most consistent part of their postseason runs. In fact, they’ve been held to just two home runs in this World Series.
In a series that has already featured a pair of ninth-inning walk-offs, this game was arguably the most dramatic. After a rocky NLCS, the Dodgers were expected to suffer a collapse in Game 5. But Kirk Gibson was on hand to hit a pinch-hit home run and inspire iconic pronouncements by Vin Scully and Jack Buck on radio.
While the Nationals didn’t win the World Series this year, Stephen Strasburg did add a couple of impressive lines to his Hall of Fame resume. He made a pair of outstanding starts, including one in which he allowed just two earned runs over six innings. Those are two hugely impressive numbers, especially given that Strasburg had been bothered by shoulder and neck issues throughout the playoffs.
